Add and Edit a Picture

To add a picture to a text editing control, place the cursor where you want the picture to be added and switch to the Insert tab in the Editing Tools ribbon. Open the drop-down menu under the button to expose the options to upload an image from your computer (From Computer), select an image somewhere else on the web using its address (From Address), or select a picture that was already uploaded to the site (From SharePoint), as shown in Figure 6. This last option is not always available and may be either missing from the menu or disabled, depending on the configuration of the site. The following sections describe these options in detail.

Figure 6. The Picture button and the drop-down menu.

After you add a picture to the page, click the picture to expose the Picture Tools ribbon (see Figure 7). On this ribbon you see the Change Picture button, which works like the Picture button. You also have the option to set the alternative text for the image (for users whose browsers do not support images, or in case the image cannot be loaded) using the Alt Text box. You can also configure the image’s size by typing a custom size, and you can resize by dragging and dropping the borders of the image. This ribbon also enables you to choose a border for the image (using the Image Styles button drop-down) and the position for the image.

Figure 7. The Picture Tools ribbon shows when you select a picture.

Use a Picture from Your Computer

To use a picture you have on your computer in a page, choose the From Computer option in the Picture drop-down described in the preceding section. This opens the Select Picture dialog, which allows you to specify the picture to upload from your computer and the library in SharePoint to upload it to.

Note

If the From SharePoint option is not available in the site you are using, From Computer is the default behavior for the Picture button, so you can simply click the button instead of opening the drop-down menu.

You choose the file you want by clicking the Browse button, choose the library, and click OK to upload. Depending on the settings for the library you chose, a dialog may ask for the picture’s properties. After you fill in the required properties and click Save, the picture is uploaded to the library and added to the page.

Use a Picture Using an Address

To use a picture that exists on the web (that is, was already uploaded to the site or on another website), you open the Picture drop-down (refer to Figure 6) and select the From Address option. This opens the Select Picture dialog, which allows you to specify the picture’s address and the alternative text that will be displayed if the picture is not available or if the user’s browser doesn’t support images (see Figure 8).
